Press Release

Date: March 10, 2016
Location: Honolulu, HI

This week, Congressman Mark Takai joined 224 of his colleagues (amici) in filing an Amicus Brief to the U.S. Supreme Court for the United States v. Texas case in favor of the President's Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA) and expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs.

"As representatives of diverse communities across the United States, amici have witnessed how an approach to enforcement of the immigration laws that does not focus on appropriate priorities, undermines confidence in those laws, wastes resources, and needlessly divides families, thereby exacting a severe human toll," the submission reads.

The implementation of Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) program and expanding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which were announced on November 2014, is temporarily blocked following a lawsuit by Texas and 25 states.

"America is a nation of immigrants. Many of us are descendants of those who came to its shores in search of a better life. To honor that history, we must adopt immigration policies that are both compassionate and sensible. The President's DACA and DAPA programs reflect those values," Takai said.
